JOHN GILCHRIST: INSURANCE MAN

John M. Gilchrist, 76, of 815 W. Cedar St., Cherokee, died March 12 at University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Gilchrist was born Feb. 8, 1905, at Birmingham, Iowa. On December 24, 1930, he married Ruby Wilson at Fremont, Iowa.

Mr. Gilchrist graduated from Birmingham High School. He received his BA degree from the University of Iowa in 1930. He came to Cherokee in 1930 and taught school for 11 years. Mr. Gilchrist owned and operated an insurance business, retiring in 1973. He had served on the Cherokee County Conversation board for five years and was a veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two half-sister, Elsie Williams and Ella Glotfelty.

The Boothby Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
