Dr. Fenton dies; rites Wednesday

Dr. Charles D. Fenton, 72, who practiced medicine in Davis County for over 40 years, died at 1 a.m. Friday in Atlanta, Ga. where he was spending the winter with his daughter.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wagler Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Fred Sawyer, assisted by the Rev. Lowell Newland. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery with military rites at the grave. The family will be at the funeral home for visitation from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. tonight (Tuesday).

Dr. Fenton was born July 15, 1904 in Davis County to Hugh P. and Lusetta Van Landingham Fenton. He was a lifelong resident of the County.

After graduating from Bloomfield High School in 1925, he attended the University of Iowa College of Medicine, graduating in 1931 as a physician and surgeon.

He interned at the W.A. Footed Memorial Hospital in Jackson, Mich. and returned to Bloomfield to practice medicine in 1932.

Dr. Fenton was associated in practice with Dr. Charles D. Shelton, senior physician and friend for whom he was named. Eleven years later, Dr. Fenton was called to serve in World War II. He spent from 1943-46 as a captain and medical officer with the 371st Engineer Construction Battalion in Europe, which built the first railroad bridge for the Allied forces across the Rhine.

Shortly after his return to Bloomfield, Dr. Shelton retired and Dr. Fenton took over the practice located above the Fenton Medical Building. He continued to practice there until November of 1971 when he became ill.

He was a member of the local, state and national medical associations; was a staff member of the Davis County Hospital; was an associate staff member of St. Joseph Hospital of Ottumwa and Ottumwa Hospital.

He was a member of the Bloomfield American Legion, the IOOF Lodge, the Izaak Walton League, the Bloomfield Country Club, the Elks Lodge No. 304 of Ottumwa; and was a former member of the Bloomfield Rotary Club.

On Sept. 15, 1932, he married Elma Lister at Lancaster, Mo.

Survivors include his widow; one daughter, Donna Lee Martin of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Lester Fenton of Carthage, Mo. and Marvin Fenton of Trenton, Mo.
