ARTIE A. "MIKE" EVANS

Artie A. "Mike" Evans, 76, of Memphis, Missouri, died at his home on May 8, 1986. Mr. Evans was born September 2, 1908, in Scotland County, Missouri, a son of George and Sarah Barker Evans.

He married Marcine Hyde on July 1, 1946, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, and she survives.

During World War II, he served with the United States Army in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Silver Star and two Oak Leaf Clusters.

Mike was employed for many years by the Memphis Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. until his retirement in 1972. He was a Charter member of the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post #4958 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Also surviving are a daughter, Connie Smoot and her husband Dean of Memphis; a son, Allen Evans and his wife Sheila of Jefferson City, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Dana and Even Smoot, Sarah Evans and Jake Stokely; one sister, Irene Kelson of Holyoke, Colorado; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Evans of Memphis.

Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were conducted by Payne-Gerth from their Memphis Chapel on Sunday, May 11, 1986, 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Kenneth Campbell officiating. Pallbearers were Gary Houghton, Jackie Goosey, Kenneth Thrasher, John H. Johnson, Jr., Pearl C. Cotton, and Paul Burns. Honorary bearers were Gerald Courtney, Harry Kirchner, Ivan Goosey, Bill Grabowski, Mansel Garrett, and Art Rice. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery following Military Graveside Services by the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial V.F.W. Post #4958.
