Lulu Mae Coil, daughter of Edwin and Julia Coil, was born October 15, 1881, near Big Springs Missouri, and died at her home in Milton Iowa, on May 14, 1939.

She received her higher education at Cape Girardeau State Normal College and Central Wesleyan Teachers College at Warrenton Missouri. Following this, she taught school for six years in Montgomery county Missouri.

In 1913, she was united in marriage to Dr. D.G. Matthews of Americus Missouri. Five years later, Dr. and Mrs. Matthews moved to the state of Iowa, where they resided for 10 years. In 1928 they moved to Vandalia Missouri where they lived until three years ago when they returned to Iowa, locating at Milton.

Mrs. Matthews was a member of the O.E.S., Baptist church and Federated clubs of Iowa and Missouri.

Surviving are her husband; one daughter, Rachael, a student at the University of Iowa; a stepson Reginald Matthews of Centralia Illinois, a granddaughter, Nancy Lea Matthews of Centralia Illinois; five sisters, Mrs. W.E. Peake of Washington D.C., Mrs. Oscar Dickey of St Louis Missouri, Mrs. Herbert Rock of Warrenton Missouri, Mrs. Charles Meyers of New Florence Missouri, Mrs. Harry Cundiff of Rhineland Missouri and three brothers, Oscar Coil of De Sota Missouri, John of St Louis and Harvey of Big Springs Missouri.

Funeral services were held at the Burnett Funeral Home in Milton at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Dr. Eric Clitheroe of Parsons College, Fairfield Iowa. Interment was in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton Iowa.
