Howard E. Smith

Howard E. Smith, 52, rural Stockport mail carrier, died Friday, Oct. 16, at 10:10 p.m. at his farm home two miles south of Birmingham.

Born July 20, 1918, near Mount Pleasant, he was the son of George and Myrtle Peterson Smith. He married Wilma Johnston Pope on Feb. 10, 1952, at Kahoka, Mo.

He had been a mail carrier many years, and was a member of the Rural Letter Carriers of Iowa. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Fairfield VFW, the Stockport American Legion and the Stockport Masonic Lodge.

Survivors in addition to his widow are two daughters, Mrs. James Dick of Douds, and Mrs. Evelyn Timmerman of Fairfield; one son, Robert Pope of Keota; six grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Harold Church of Lockridge and Mrs. J.W. McSweeney of Delavan, Wis.

The service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19 at the Stockport Christian Church conducted by the rev. Chester C. Werft. Burial with military rites was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield.
