Herbert R. Smith

A former Bonaparte man, Herbert R. Smith, 47, of Kahoka, Mo., was killed instantly in a one-car accident Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1969, at 12:30 p.m. on Hwy. 136, just outside of Wayland, Mo.

Officers reported Smith's car left the road on a curve, striking a road sign and two trees. Smith formerly of lived west of Bonaparte. He was employed by the Central Road District of Clark County, Missouri.

Born July 19, 1921, at Bonaparte, he was the son of Louis and Mary Parker Smith. He married Elizabeth M. Messer, Feb. 11, 1952, at Kahoka. She survives.

Also surviving are five children, Michael, James, Jeffrey, Kevin and Patricia, all at home; three children by a previous marriage, Daniel Smith, Mrs. Betty Hope and Mrs. Sandra Zepeda, all of Des Moines; three brothers, Harvey of Farmington and Delbert and Alvin of Mount Pleasant; and one sister, Berniece Carver of Mount Pleasant.

The funeral was Thursday at 2 p.m. at Wayland, Mo., Baptist Church, with the Rev. George Compton officiating. Burial was in Kahoka Cemetery.
