DR. FRANK M. McClurg

Dr. Frank M. McClurg, son of Dr. Joseph and Amanda Walker McClurg, was born April 25, 1876,in Keosauqua, and departed this life Friday, September 12, 1975, at the Nelson Nursing Home in Fairfield, at the age of 99. He had been a resident of the nursing home a week, following a five weeks' hospitalization. Prior to that he had lived in his own home in Keosauqua, where he had lived his entire life, except for the time spent in dental college and a year in Fort Dodge.

He graduated from Keosauqua High School with the class of 1896 and from Keokuk Dental College in 1902. Following a year's practice in Fort Dodge, he returned to Keosauqua to practice with is father and brother. He continued active in his practice until mid-1974, thereby completing 119 years of continuous service to the Keosauqua community by the McClurg family.

The building housing his office was constructed by his grandfather, Joel Walker, a pioneer builder, for Dr. Joseph McClurg. During the early years office hours were from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

On September 26, 1906, Dr. McClurg was married to Margaret Josephine Roberts in Keosauqua. She was a sister of Dr. Ralph Roberts, well-known philanthropist who established the Van Buren Foundation. Mrs. McClurg died April 25, 1952. A sister and two brothers also preceded him in death.

Remaining to cherish his memory are a son, and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Haven McClurg of Fairfield, other relatives, and a host of former patients, friends and the community in general, which will always reflect with admiration upon his long life of active service.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 15, 1975, at 2 p.m. at the Keosauqua Congregational Church with the Rev. Harold Schnedler, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Ethel Carnahan was the organist. Pall bearers were Dr. C.R. Perkins, John A. Manning, Bert M. Leck, Harvey Spuregon, Carl Hohl, and Hugh McCoy. Intermetn was in Purdom Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home.
