Carlyle A. Smith

Carlyle A. Smith, son of Elza and Nellie Shadduck Smith, was born December 19, 1896, at Bladdensburg and departed this life Wednesday April 25, 1973, at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 76.

A retired painter, he was self-employed, and lived for many years in Chicago, Illinois and Blanding, Utah. The past six years he had lived with his sister, Mrs. Doris Harrison at Lebanon.

Remaining to cherish his memory are his sister, a niece, Mrs. Loraine Megrath, a nephew, Kenneth Salmon, two great nieces and great nephews. He was twice widowed. A brother and sister also preceded him in death. Lyle was an Army Artillery veteran of World War I, and a member of the American Legion, World War I Veterans of Foreign Wars, all at Keosauqua.

He will be remembered for his self-reliance and courage in the face of adversity, for his patriotism in veterans' affairs, as well as his devotion to his family.

Funeral services were held Saturday April 28, 1973 at 2 p.m. at the Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds with the Rev. Earl D. Kelly pastor of the Lebanon United Methodist Church officiating. Kathleen Pedrick was the organist. Pall bearers were Seve Barber, Charles Gaskell, Leslie Runyon, Bert Leck, Merle McDonald, and Terry Gonterman, all Veterans of Foreign Wars. Members of the World War I Veterans served as Honor Guard. The American Legion provided military rites. Interment was in Lebanon Cemetery.
