Stockport Drive Dies In Wreck

James H. Topping, 31, of Stockport rural, was killed instantly Friday, Sept. 29, in a 2-car head-on accident 6 1/2 miles north of here on Iowa 146. Three other were injured.

The Iowa Highway Patrol said a passenger in the car driven by Topping, 34-year-old Jimmie Crouse of Keosauqua, was hospitalized at Iowa City with head and face cuts.

Driver of the other car, Hubert Wormhoudt, 53, of Ottumwa, was hospitalized at Ottumwa with leg and arm injuries and face cuts. His wife, Hazel, 48, a passenger, also was hospitalized at Ottumwa with back injuries and face cuts.

Troopers said the Topping car crossed the center line and collided headon with the oncoming Wormhoudt auto.

Mr. Topping was born July 8, 1941, the son of Mrs. Rita Jeffrey of Stockport rural and Dean Topping, Birmingham, rural.

Surviving: The parents; two sons, David Eugene and Chad Allen, both of Birmingham rural; four half-brothers, Ned, Stockport, Dennis, Wesley and Carl, Birmingham rural; one half-sister, Mrs. Teresa Phillips, Mt. Sterling; and his step-father, Rosco Jeffrey; Stockport.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 2, at the Birmingham United Methodist Church with the Rev. Millard Marshall officiating. Burial was in Miller Chapel Cemetery.
