John Baldwin Arnold

John Baldwin Arnold, son of John L. and Louisa Warner Arnold, died at the Bloomfield Manor on July 28, 1978, at the age of 84 years, three months and 14 days. He was born near Winchester, Iowa, April 14, 1894.

Mr. Arnold was united in marriage to Hazel M. Miller of Keosauqua, Iowa in January 5, 1918 in Des Moines. She died on August 3, 1973.

He was educated in the Van Buren County schools. He farmed near Utica until 1936 when he moved to a farm near Milton. For the past two years he has made his home with his son, Verle, in Bloomfield.

His grandparents were John B. and Louisa Cupp Arnold, two of the early settlers of Van Buren County, moving there from Ohio in 1855.

He was a member of the Milton United Methodist Church and several farm groups. He loved the soil and was a strong believer in conservation of the soil. He was credited with being the first in Van Buren County to practice contour farming.

Surviving are two sons: Verle M. of Bloomfield, and Dr. D.D. of Mason City, ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a brother, Roy, of Middletown. Two brothers, Alva and Rufus, and a sister, Stella (Mrs. Chester Fry), preceded hin in death. Grandchildren include: John of Centerville, Jacque (Mrs. Jerry Pirtle) Moberly, Mo., Gene of Ames, Jeff of Des Moines, and Patty, Penny, Mark, Robin, Heather, and David of Mason City.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 30, 1978, at the Milton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Harold Harryman officiating. Burial: Miller Chapel Cemetery near Mt. Zion in Van Buren County. Memorial: Milton United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers: Donald Hargrove, Henry Allen, Eugene Grim, Irvin Archer, Oscar Bachma; LeRoy Robison.
