Arden P. Wingate dies at 78

Arden P. Wingate, 78, of Libertyville, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Jefferson County Hospital. He had been ill for six months.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Connor officiating. Burial will be in Fell Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to children's literature at the Fairfield Public Library.

Wingate was born July 28, 1905 in Herrin, Ill. On July 5, 1925 in Murphysboro, Ill., he married Mary E. Roach, who survives.

Also surviving are five sons, Ray C. of Ottumwa, Donald G. of Libertyville, Larry L. of Winterset, Phillip A. of Cantril, Anthony S. of Douds; one daughter, Dorothy I. Ward of Mesa, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters, Vada Van DerPol and Eva Dunning, both of Florida, Elizabeth Barth and Doreen DiVerde, both of Chicago, Ill.

Arden had lived more than 44 years in Jefferson County, had worked 20 years at Louden's and operated Wingate's Welding Shop.
