S. Holmes dies at 84

Sidney V. Holmes, 84, 1003 S. Third St., died Tuesday morning at the Jefferson County Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past year.

Services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Donnellson with the Rev. Donald Stoll officiating. Burial will be in Evangelical Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hofbauer Funeral Home in Donnellson.

Holmes had been a resident of Fairfield for three years. he was born March 2, 1897 in Lee County, the son of Francis and Emma Drollenger Holmes. He was married to Emma Ida Klug Dec. 16, 1914. A retired Stockport area farmer, he was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ at Donnellson and the Masonic Lodge of Stockport.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Osborne Holmes, Birmingham, and Donald Holmes, Stockport; and five Ruby Sharp, Santa Maria, Calif.; Shirley Avery, Denmark; Marian Bales, Clinton, Ark.; Fay Giberson, Lebanon, Ill.; and Ruth Heston, Stockport.

Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons.
