Mr. Clay H. Chapius, 78, died in Van Buren County Memorial hospital, Keosauqua, at 12:25 a.m. Tuesday, June 1.

For the past 25 years, Mrs. Chapuis had lived on a farm six miles south of Stockport. For that same period of time, he had served as custodian of Jefferson county hospital, at Fairfield.

Mr. Chapuis was the son of Peter and Mary Droz, Chapuis, and was born in Van Buren county on Jan. 6, 1887. He served 26 months overseas in World War 1. On April 6, 1939, he was married to Hele Peterson, who died May 11, 1959.

Mr. Chapuis is survived by three brothers and a sister, Louis Chapuis, Keosauqua; Walter Chapuis, Fairfiel; Ray Chapuis, Stockport and Mrs. Iola Johnston, Memphis Mo. A brother and a sister died previously.

Funeral services will be held at the Weston Behner funeral home, Fairfield, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Chester C. Werft, pastor of Stockport Christian church, will officiate. Burial with military rites by the Stockport American Legion, of which Mr. Chapius was a member, will take place in Evergreen cemetery.
