MRS. HERMAN SMITH

Mrs. Joan Smith, 31, of Keokuk, died Sunday, Dec. 19, at 7:46 p.m. in Graham Hospital, Keokuk, of injuries received in the Thanksgiving Eve blast at the National Eve blast at the National Guard Armory. She was the 21st victim of the disaster.

She was born March 29, 1934, at Keokuk, the daughter of James R. and Cecil Dorothy Nichols Eastin. She spent her childhood in Farmington.

On Sept. 24, 1952 at Farmington, she married Herman Smith of Farmington, who survives. He was also injured in the blast and is a patient in the Army Burn Center at Brooke General Hospital, Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas.

She was a former resident of Farmington and Powdertown. She was employed by the Dryden Division of Sheller Mfg. Corp. at Keokuk.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three children, Billy 10, Linda 9, and Robert 3, who are being cared for by their grandparents, the Harvey Smiths, at Farmington; she is also survived by her mother of Farmington; two brothers, David Eastin of Farmington, Rex Eastin of Arbela, Mo.; two sisters, Shirley Pogue of Wichita, Kans., and Dorothy Overby of Waukegan, Ill.; nine nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, James R. Eastin.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church at Farmington with the Rev. Leroy Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Embury cemetery southwest of Donnellson. The body is at Miller's Home for Funerals in Farmington.
