Virginia Ellen Troutman, 96, of Farmington, IA, passed away October 29, 2017, at her home surrounded by her daughters

She was born July 5, 1921, at Bonaparte, IA, the daughter of Donald Harley Proper and Clara Hermina Johnson Proper. She married Lloyd George Troutman, April 29, 1939, at Palmyra, MO. He preceded her in death.

Virginia lived in San Diego, CA, and Fremont, NE, before moving to Bonaparte, IA, where she lived for most of her adult life until she moved to Farmington. She worked as an inspector at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, and co-owned and operated the Troutman. Grocery Store in Bonaparte for 20 years. In her spare time, she loved to do crossword puzzles, work in the yard, and play cards with family and friends. She collected lighthouse figurines and items adorned with dragonflies. She was also a great cook, and made the best rhubarb pies and cobblers around. Virginia had a compassionate heart and also loved animals, and had several Yorkshire terriers over the years. In her later years, she adopted a stray cat and sat on the porch with it every afternoon. She touched many lives and was dearly loved and will be missed.

She is survived by four daughters, Sandra Lee McIntosh of Farmington, IA; Marcia Ann Hendrichsen of Stuart, FL; Deborah Mae Levens of San Dimas, CA; and Alicia Kay Garnett of Beatrice, NE; nine grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Proper and Donald Proper; and two sisters, Irene Burns and Wannabelle Mosier.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Worthy Fletcher Proper; and one sister, Dorothy Iris Morgan. Her body has been entrusted to the Schmitz Funeral Homes for cremation. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at the Bonaparte Cemetery.

The Schmitz Funeral Home of Farmington is assisting the family with arrangements.
