RALPH RUSSELL

Ralph S. Russell 73, died suddenly Sunday afternoon, April 16 in his car four miles northeast of Grinnell. He had been fishing with his wife in a farm pond when he became ill.

Born July 27, 1894 at Bonaparte, Iowa, To Kane and Jane Merrill Russell, he attended rural schools near his home.

On Feb. 22, 1918, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a private first class with the casualty detachment in the 82nd Division.

Following his discharge, he worked as a hired man for several farmers near Grinnell for over 45 years. He made his home in Grinnell for 30 years.

On Oct. 15, 1943, Mr. Russell was united in marriage with Marjorie Nichols in Des Moines. He was the father of six children, Howard of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; Chester of St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Helen Ripley of Davenport; Ralph S. Jr. of Corpus Christi, Tex.; Mrs. Jean Lebeda and Donald Russell of Cedar Rapids.

Survivors besides his wife and children are nine step-children; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Glenn Russell of Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Sadie Peterson of Hiawatha, Iowa; Mrs. Lillie Reddig of Richland, Iowa, and Mrs. Marjorie Muntz of Bonaparte.

Mr. Russell was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19 at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald A. Rich, pastor of the First Assembly of God church, officiating. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery with American Legion graveside rites.
