Fred W. Carter, 89, of Douds, IA, passed away September 14, 2017, at Jefferson County Health Care Center. Funeral services were held September 18, 2017, at Mt. Moriah Church north of Douds, IA, with Pastor Phil Campbell officiating. Burial was held immediately following the service at the Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

Freddie Wayne Carter was born in Wapello County, IA, on August 2, 1928, to Clyde and Doris "McMickle' Carter. He grew up on the family farm and attended rural school until his early teens, when he returned home to the farm to care for his family. This turn in life quickly forced a hard working boy into a hard working man. His roots were deeply planted in the family farm and he took over the day to day operations, which included milking cows, building fence, and tending to the crops and other livestock. This devotion to family was something that would stay with Fred throughout his life. As Fred grew older he would take some time away from the farm and attend square dances in Eldon. It was there where he met the love of his life, Ruth Filson. Their journey together as husband and wife began August 11, 1951, in the Eldon Methodist Church. This was the first chapter in a story that lasted over 66 years. Fred and Ruth began their life together living in Birmingham, IA, and welcomed the birth of their first child Danny. The family eventually moved to the current farm in Douds and welcomed Ronald and Debra to the family. In the mid 1960s began digging graves for local cemeteries as well as mowing the Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Fred played a roll in over 2000 burials over a span of almost 40 years. Everything that he did, from the mowing to the grave digging, was done with Ruth by his side. Fred and Ruth were always busy and enjoyed their time at home, but they always made time to use their lifetime pass to attend Van Buren basketball games. He and Ruth also made Sure to attend the Wapello County Fair. Fred was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His family came first. This was evident from an early age until his last days here with us. He will be greatly missed by his family and those lucky enough to call him friend.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Ruth Carter; one son, Danny Carter and three siblings, Clifford Carter, Rosemary Carter, and Betty Shumaker.

Left to share his story are his children, Ron (Cathy) Carter and Debra (Dan) Loftus both of Douds, LA; five sisters, Lucille Sapp, Ruth Ann Downing, Martha Marker, Patty (Dennis) Durflinger and Dorothy Wells; one brother, William “Bill" Carter; five grandchildren, Patrick Lennox, Dustin (Krista) Carter, D.A. (Megan) Carter, Sarah (Matt Groves) Carter and Michaele (Tyler) Cook, as well as six great-grandchildren, many extended family and a host of friends.
