R. Larry Brown 1929-2017

R. Larry Brown, 88, of Montrose, IA, died July 11, 2017, at his home.

He was born March 15, 1929, in Ft. Madison, IA, the son of Raymond Lester and Martha Elizabeth Wardlow Brown. On November 26, 1950, he was united in marriage to Lola Jean Wulf. She preceded him in death on April 10, 2017.

Larry graduated from Keokuk High School.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country.

He was a member of the Montrose Lion's Club and the American Legion Post #41 in Keokuk. He had served on the Central Lee School Board and was a past president. He had also served on the FHA board. Larry spent many years Volunteering at the Montrose Watermelon Festivals.

Larry was a life-long farmer and needed nothing more to make life worthwhile than to farm his fields and love his family. He was a wonderful, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who leaves for his family a lifetime of wonderful memories. He enjoyed spending time with his dogs.

He is survived by one son, Gordon Brown, and wife Linda of Montrose, IA, two daughters, Diane Grossman, and husband Dennis of Farmington, IA, and Carla Varnold, and husband Curtis of Parker, CO, seven grandchildren, Denise Evans, and husband Jason of Vinton, LA, Dawn Conklin, and husband Eric of Center Point, IA, Dana Huling, and husband Justin of Hillsboro, IA, Joshua Varnold, and wife Jillian of Castle Rock, CO, Nathan Varnold of Denver, CO, Craig Carter of Montrose, IA, and Rebekah Carter of Montrose, IA, eight great-grandchildren, one brother, Roger Brown, and his wife Barb of Keokuk, and nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, Larry was also preceded in death by his parents and one son, Ron Brown.

Funeral services were held July 15, 2017, at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Laurie Wardlow and Elaine Foley officiating. Burial with military rights was in the Montrose Cemetery.

Vigen Memorial Home assisted the family with arrangements.
