War Veteran Dies at Ripe Old Age

Funeral services for William Breitenstein, 98, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Farmington Methodist church with Rev. Dale Nicholson officiating, Rev. Butler assisting. Burial was made in the Aclam cemetery three miles east of town. He died Sunday, Oct. 1.

Mr. Breitenstein was the last surviving civil was veteran in Farmington. He was born August 15, 1841, at Ft. Madison, Lee county. He was left an orphan at the age of four and was raised by friends.

Feb. 27, 1864, he enlisted in Company B, 3rd Iowa Regiment, Iowa Volunteers and was honorably discharged August 9, 1865, at Atlanta, Georgia.

He was united in marriage with Miss Alice Campbell Dec. 7, 1880, at Ft. Madison. They established a home three miles east of Farmington where they continued to live until 1913 when they moved to Farmington. Mr. Breitenstein was a very friendly man, very fond of children. He had been in failing health for around two years and in a critical condition several weeks.

Those surviving are the widow and six children, Walter on the home farm near town, Mrs. Iva Ryner of Davenport, Mrs. Lottie Martin of Milan, Mo., Mrs. Charles Woods and Mrs. Forrest White of Ft. Madison and Mrs. Henry Roth of near Farmington and a number of grandchildren and a large circle of friends. A son, Harry, passed away eight years ago.

Eli McKinney, of Bentonsport, the only living civil war veteran in Van Buren county, attended the funeral services. Mr. McKinney is about six years younger than Mr. Breitenstein.
