James C. Austin

James C. Austin, son of Samuel and Sarah Roberts Austin was born May 25, 1881 in Greene County, Tennessee and passed away at the Nelson Nursing Home in Fairfield, Iowa on Dec. 30, 1965 at the age of 84 years 7 months and 5 days.

On April 27, 1899 he was married to Matilda Landreth also of Greene County, Tenn. To this union were born ten children.

Mr. Austin moved to Iowa with his family in 1902 and engaged in farming in Johnson County. In 1911 he moved to Van Buren County, residing on a farm near Pittsburg. He continued farming in that area until 1945, except for a brief period when he lived in University Park, Iowa. Since 1945 he had resided in Keosauqua.

Mr. Austin made a profession of the Christian faith as a young man and was faithful and devoted Christian worker throughout his life. For many years Mr. Austin held a local preacher’s license in the Methodist Church. Although continuing as a farmer, he served over the years as pastor to many Methodist Churches in Monroe, Davis, Appanoose and Van Buren Counties. He was also active in evangelistic work until the last few years and continued officiating at funerals until recently.

He was aa [a] member of the Pittsburg Methodist Church until it disbanded and since then had been a member of the Keosauqua Me[t]hodist Church.

Mr. Austin is survived by his wife, three sons, Reuben of Keosauqua, Raymond and and Kenneth of Des Moines; five daughters, Mrs. H. P. Smith of Omaha, Mrs. D. W. Forbes of Denver, Mrs. W. J. Morrison of West Bend, Mrs. F. P. Morgan of Dallas, and Mrs. Earl Beck of Bettendorf; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; a brother, J. R. Austin of Belle Plaine, Kan.; and two sisters, Mrs. Fleda Summers of Heavener, Okla., and Mrs. Georgia Poindexter of Belle Plaine, Kan.

He was preceded in death by two infant children and a sister and a half brother.
