OBITUARY
Mary Elvah Stratton was born in Clark county, Illinois, August 31, 1879, and died February 13, 1901, aged 21 years, 5 months and 21 days. Her mother died when she was four years old, and from the age of 13 years until her marriage, she was the mistress of her father's home. She removed from Illinois with her father, brother, and sister, January 14, 1897, and has resided in Van Buren county most of the time since.
She was united in marriage with Will Allen Chapman, December 25, 1897, and was the mother of two children, the eldest of which died July 24, 1899, aged 9 months.
She leaves to mourn her loss, her father, brother, husband, and wee babe, other relatives and numerous friends. She was baptized and united with the Mt. Zion Baptist church, of Bonaparte, August 22, 189[?can't read], and was a member in good standing at the time of her death.
Her Christian life has been fruitful and her witness clear. She has been an active worker in the church, so far as health would permit. She has ever maintained prayerful intercourse with the father of all, throughout her married life and has manifested earnest solicitations for the conversion of her loved ones. The happiness and comfort of the inmates of the homes over which she has presided has ever been her chief concern, she never having marred the domestic happiness and peace of her married life by angry words. Her relations with her friends have been such that they will ever cherish the memory of Mrs. Chapman. Her last illness was brief--so brief that her loved ones can scarcely realize she is gone. She was conscious until the last, conversed with her friends, and expressed hopes of soon being well. She did not realize she was dying and quietly went to sleep. It is with thankful hearts we can hope she is asleep in Jesus.
