Joanne Jemison 1933-2017

Joanne Jemison, age 83, of Sigourney, died January 18, 2016 [2017], at Manor House Care Center in Sigourney, IA.

Joanne was born July 1, 1933, in Mt. Sterling, IA, to Lloyd and Thelma (Merrick) Madden and graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1951. She then moved to Des Moines. On February 3, 1953, she married Jimmie Minks, who was killed in 1958. She then married Carl Jemison on January 15, 1960. Following marriage the couple moved to Oskaloosa and then to Sigourney in 1966. Joanne was a cook at Sigourney High School and an evening cook at the Sigourney Care Center for many years. She was an active member of the Sigourney United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Ad Council. Joanne enjoyed music, gardening, flowers, basketball and Tuesday morning coffee, toast and Bible study.

Survivors include her husband Carl "Skip" Jemison of Sigourney; three daughters: Kathy (Rick) Minks-Foust of Sigourney, Sheryl Jemison-Wood of Flemington, NJ, and Lindy (Mike) Jemison-Hammes of Sigourney; one son: Randall Jemison of Texarkana, AR; 11 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter: Karen Minks-Greiner; grandson: Jimmy Foust; son-in-law: Dan Wood; and two brothers: Gene Madden and Kenneth Madden.

Funeral service was held January 21, 2017, at the Sigourney United Methodist Church, with Rev. Shannon Pascual officiating. Burial will be in Harness Cemetery in Mt. Sterling, IA, at a later date.

Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney assisted the family with arrangements for Joanne.
