MRS. MARY WEIHER MURPHY DIES AT AN ADVANCED AGE

The Lacon, Ill., Home Journal of June 11 contains the following obituary sketch of Mrs. Mary Murphy who was almost ninety years of age when she died on Monday, July 8 at the home of her son, Minor, in Lacon, Ill. She and her family formerly lived in Bonaparte. Her maiden name was Mary Weiher, daughter of Lewis C. Weiher
----------
Mrs. Mary Wilhelmina Murphy, nearing her 94th birthday, passed into eternal rest Monday morning, after a brief illness since Thursday of last week. She slept quietly away.

She was born at Wheeling, Pa., July 20, 1835, and died at the home of her son, Minor Murphy, in Lacon, July 8, 1929, aged 93 years, 11 months and 19 days.

When she was about eight years of age she moved with her parents from Pennsylvania to Keokuk, settling there at an early day, when there was only one house in the town. Her early years were spent in southeastern Iowa.

She was married May 12, 1859, at Athens, Mo., to James Henry Murphy. There were born to them 10 children, three boys and seven girls. All of these have passed away except three: Mrs. Icy Dial of St. Louis, Mrs. Augustine Leach of St. Charles, Mo., and Minor Murphy of this place. Her husband preceded her in death 30 years ago last May.

After a residence in Bonaparte, Iowa, and St. Louis, Mrs. Murphy came to the home of her son in Lacon two years ago, where she resided until her death. Although greatly advanced in age she was quite active and able bodied. Her mother lived to the ripe old age of 94, and died on the same day of the month, July 8th.

Besides her two daughters and son, Mrs. Murphy is survived also by 17 grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell of Keokuk, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the home of her son, Minor Murphy on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. E.E. Atherton of the Methodist church officiating. Interment was made in the Lacon cemetery.
