Bert Smutz

Funeral services for Bert Smutz, 77, was held Monday, Feb. 20 at Devils Lake, North Dakota. He died at the Devils Lake hospital Thursday Feb. 16.

A native of Van Buren County, he was the son of Randal Smutz and Kathryn McVeigh, born April 2, 1884 on the Smutz farm east of Stockport, now owned by John Anderson.

He was married in Des Moines, Dec. 22, 1912 to Effie Holliday of Stockport who survives. Also surviving are two sons, James of Riverside, Calif. and Jack of Bismarck, North Dakota; two daughters, Helen Lang of Yankton, South Dakota and Betty Lou Thorensen of Waconia, Minn.; one brother Same S. Smutz of Stockport, Iowa.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Smutz and won Waldo started Friday to Devils Lake to attend the funeral services but was forced to return home because of the prevailing winds.
