Mrs. E.J. Wormley

Emma Josephine Crowner was born in Watertown, New York, Feb. 23, 1849, and died in Keosauqua, Iowa, March 27, 1908, thus being aged 59 years, 1 month and 4 days. Surviving her, of her own immediate family, are Mrs. E.L. Carleton, of Denver, Colo., Mrs. J.Y. Levengood, of Brooklyn, N.Y., her only brother D.B. Crowner of Brookfield, Mo., besides a nephew and several nieces, among whom is Mrs. J.B. Hanna of Brookfield, Mo., who has spent many months with her aunt here. Since coming to Keosauqua 12 years ago and for years before Mrs. Wormley had the companionship, both in her business and in her home, of her devoted friends, Miss Orpha Bonney and Mrs. J.C. Philo, and between her and both these friends existed a remarkable and unusual friendship, which had remained unbroken for years. During her long illness, which confined her to her home for 17 months, she had their constant and tender care, for which they were rewarded by her patient endurance of her sufferings, and never failing gratefulness for their service. The passing away of Mrs. Wormley was the ending of intense suffering, from which she longed to be freed. Knowing her disease to be incurable and that life held for her naught but an endless round of pain, she was willing and glad to be at rest, and but for the leaving of her friends had no regrets of going. Never in all her life had she been blessed with perfect health even when engaged in the active pursuit of business which occupied many years of her life. Mrs. Wormley was a woman of noble traits of character. She was thoughtful of others, kind and generous, - generous even to her own detriment. Many were the deeds of kindness and charity she did unknown to the world.

A high sense of honor governed her in all her dealings. She was a most constant and faithful friend and those who knew her best loved her most. The funeral was at the home Monday afternoon, services conducted by Rev. Thorn, and music by the Choral Choir of the M.E. church. The body was laid to rest in the Oak Lawn cemetery.
