Virgil M. Hart, 83, of Waukegan, IL, passed away on November 8, 2016, at his home. He was born on February 2, 1933, in West Point, IA, to John M. and Ruby E. Dorothy Hart. He married Betty R. Howell, they later divorced. He then married Xiaoying Qiao.

Virgil worked as a law enforcement officer for the City of Fort Madison, IA, and the Naval Station of Great Lakes; Sheriff of Hancock County, IL, and a member of the Illinois Bureau of Investigation. He retired as a substance abuse counselor for the Veterans Administration Hospital of North Chicago.

Virgil was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War and the Masonic Lodge in Fort Madison and Burlington, IA. He served in the Korean War as a flight crewman on B29s, receiving the Korean Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, United Nations Korean Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.

Virgil is survived by: his wife Xiaoying Qiao of Waukegan, IL; four sons: Virgil of Virginia Beach, VA, Douglas (Jaqui) of Solon, IA, Bradley of Fort Madison, IA, and David Hart-Qiao of Chicago, IL; six daughters: Mary Kathryn Hart of Keosauqua, IA, Susan (Bob Gantz). Hart, Betty Hart and Tami Maddox of Burlington, IA, Valerie (Paul Merkes) Canby of Peosta, IA, and Lori (Kevin) Levins of Wilton, LA; 27 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

The funeral service was held on November 15, 2016, at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Mary Kathryn Hart officiating. The burial was held in Soldiers' Circle, Oakland Cemetery with military rites performed by the Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard.
