William Frederick Arthmann was born at Lockport, NY, April 15, 1900, the son of Audolph and Agusta Frank Arthmann, and departed this life January 19, 1940, at the age of 39 years, 9 months and 11 days at this home in Keosauqua, IA. When Will was about five years of age the family moved to Rochester, NY where most of the family have kept their residence.
In 1917, Will joined the Navy from which he received an honorable discharge after several months service. He went to Lackawana, NY, where he worked for several years. In 1923 his health broke and he spent a year at the State Sanitarium at Raybrook, NY. In 1924 he entered the Veteran's Bureau Hospital at Castle Point, NY and later transferred to the Veteran's Bureau Hospital at Sunmount, NY, in the Adirondack Mountains. In April, 1928 he was dischared from Sunmount as an arrested case of Tuberculois and returned to Rochester, NY and established a home.
On November 5, 1927 he was united in marriage to Esther Gilbert at Lake Placid, NY. In June 1929, they moved to Iowa and March 1, 1930, they came to Keosauqua and established their home. Four children were born to this union. William Lawrence, 10 years old, James Hiram, 6 years old, Jane Ann, 3 years old and Charles Bilbert who lived only a few days.
Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his passing his father Audolph who made his home with Will, three brothers, Audolph, Charles and Arthur and a half brother Clarence, all of Rochester, NY. Also a niece, three nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. His mother, a brother,a sister and a son have preceded him in death.
Will was a member of the Salem Evangelical Church of Rochester, NY until he moved to Keosauqua when he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Before coming to Keosauqua he had always been an active member of the Disabled Veterans and at the time of his passing was an active member of the Clyde Beer Post of the American Legion and at one time was Commander of the Post. For the past several years he was connected with the South Iowa Creamery Association.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. D. H. Orf and the Rev. M. E. Hayes from the Keosauqua M. E. Church, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Internment was in Oaklawn Cemetery at Keosauqua with military rites.
