Obituary of Albert J. Behner

Albert Jacob Behner was born at Hopedale, Ill., September 4, 1888, and died at Denver, Col., September 22, 1928. He was the son of Frederick Charles and Emma (Crichfield) Behner.

He received the A.B. degree from the University of Denver in 1917, and the Bachelor of Divinity degree from the Iliff School of Theology in 1919 also the A.M. degree from the University of Chicago in 1919. In 1928 he finished his research work and obtained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago.

At Oklahoma, Iowa, December 22, 1915, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Mae Peek of that city. Two children, Genevieve Evelyn and Lois Irene came to bless the home.

Professor Behner joined the Methodist Episcopal church in 1916 and was admitted that year into the Iowa Conference on trial. There he served until 1918, when he was ordained Traveling Deacon and became a member of the Iowa conference and was left without appointment to attend school.

In 1919 he transferred to the Rock River Conference and accepted an appointment at Norwood Park. In 1920 in the Rock River Conference annual session he was ordained Traveling Elder under Seminary rule. In 1925 he was transferred to the Colorado Conference.

Professor Behner was pastor in Iowa and Illinois until 1919, when he became instructor in Sociology in the Chicago Training School. He was Professor of Religion at Washburn College, Topeka, Kansas, from 1921 to 1924, and since the Autumn of 1924 has been Professor of Christian Theology and Ethics in the Iliff Graduate School of Theology.

Besides the wife and two daughters, he leaves two sisters and one brother: Mrs. Alta B. Miller, Miss Bernice R., and Weston F., all of Birmingham, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at the Chapel of the school on September 25th. Bishop Charles L. Mead was in charge of the service and gave the funeral sermon. President E. Guy Cutshall followed with a brief statement of vital statistics and with a word of interpretation of the life and work of Professor Behner. The Professors of the school acted as pallbearers. Interment was made at Crown Hill Cemetery, which lies to the west of Denver, commanding a view of the mountains and under the clear skies of Colorado.
