MRS. LYDIA WALKER.

Mrs. Lydia Walker of South Keosauqua, widow of Josiah Walker, died Thursday morning after about two weeks' sickness of pneumonia, aged 81 years and 2 days.

Mrs. Walker's maiden name was Lydia Glatfelter. She was born March 7, 1824, near Rossville, York county, Pa., and was married to Josiah Walker Dec. 11, 1845. The latter died in April, 1894, aged 76 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Walker lived in Pennsylvania until 1858. Nine children were born to them, three of whom were buried in Pennsylvania. In the spring of 1858 they came to this place, where two of Mr. Walker's brothers, Joel and Wesley, had come some years before. They did not bring much money with them, not quite enough to pay for 92 acres of land which has since been their home, although when they bought it it was arough timber and hazelbrush wilderness.

However, they were patient, industrious, economical people and soon had enough money saved to pay for their home, but it took every penny they had, and they often related how it was a couple of weeks or more before they could get enough money to pay for recording their deed.

They continued to prosper, and at the death of the husband they owned not only the 92 acres here, but a good quarter section in Scotland county and had considerable means besides.

As stated the husband and father died 11 years ago. Of the five daughter and four sons, three died in Pennsylvania, and others died after the removal to Keosauqua, the last to pass away being Rilla whose death occurred three years ago in Oklahoma and who was buried here. Only two survive their mother, Miss Rosa Walker and Mrs. Amanda Terrill(?).

Mrs. Walker was a consistent and faithful member of the M.E. church. She was a kind and affectionate mother, a good neighbor and was respected by all. The funeral services were held from her late residence, being conducted by Rev. H.A. Ingham. The interment was in the Purdum(sp) cemetery.
