Mrs. Ethel Calhoun
Mrs. Ethel Nelson Calhoun, 95, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 13 in Burlington hospital where she had been a patient since Jan. 5.
She spent most of her life in Birmingham but more recently had been making her home with a son, John N. Calhoun, alternative judge of Burlington's municipal court.
Mrs. Calhoun was a life member of the Birmingham Methodist church and president of its Ladies Aid for 14 years. She was a charter member of the Haney-Brannon American Legion Post and historian since its founding in 1928. She was also a charter member of the Birmingham library board of trustees.
Mrs. Calhoun was born Nov. 1, 1869, near Mt. Zion, the daughter of John W. and Eliza Bonar Nelson. On Jan. 20, 1882, she married Orange S. Calhoun, at the Nelson homestead. Mr. Calhoun died Dec. 14, 1931.
In addition to her son, she is survived by 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Three sons, Claude, Dr. Orange Calhoun and Herbert, and four sisters and a brother are dead.
Services were held Sunday, Jan. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at the Birmingham Methodist church.
