Obituary of Mr. and Mrs. Boley

Mrs. Hannah Boley died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L.A. Runyon, Thursday, March 18th. She had been afflicted with rheumatism for a number of years and at times was almost helpless. A week previous to her death grippe and its complications set in and Sunday afternoon she and her faithful husband were taken to the Runyon home a mile west of town. All that loving hands and tender, watchful care could do, was done, but the final summons came early Thursday and she passed peacefully away, surrounded by the sorrowing family. Her husband, who had so patiently and tenderly cared for her so many years was stricken with pneumonia a few days previous, and the family realized that not only Mother, but Daddy - as he was familiarly called - too, would soon be a memory. The end came about thirty hours after that of the wife, and the double funeral was held from the Baptist church Sunday at 11 o'clock and the couple united in life for 58 years were laid in the same grave, there to await the Resurrection Morn. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Hillsboro, and the doubly stricken family have the sympathy of the entire neighborhood. Daddy Boley's sunny smile, his patient nature, his jolly good humor and his gentle kindheartedness, will long be remembered and missed, and Aunt Hannah's place in the church and home will not soon be forgotten. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. C.S. Carroll, twelve of the grandsons acting as pallbearers.

Nicholas Boley, son of George and Catherine Boley, was born in Harrison county, Indiana, Jan. 5th, 1835. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1839, settling one mile west of Hillsboro and was united in marriage to Hannah Smutz, Dec. 24th, 1857. Ms. Boley was the oldest of a family of four children, all of whom have preceded him to the heavenly home. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L.A. Runyon, March 19th, 1915, after an illness of two days, in his 81st year. In faith, Mr. Boley was a Baptist, having united with the Free Baptist church of Hillsboro Aug. 15th, 1863.

Hannah Smutz, daughter of David and Eleanor Smutz, was born in Westmoreland Co., Penn., Oct. 3rd, 1835, and came with her parents to Iowa in 1855, settling two and one-half miles west of Hillsboro, Iowa. She was a member of the Hillsboro First Baptist church, having united together with thirteen others to form this church, May 19th, 1855. She was united in marriage to Nicholas Boley, Dec. 24th, 1857. To this union were born eight children, all of whom are living, except one daughter, Lucinda McCoy, who died May 30th, 1908. They are Sylvester G., Melissa (Mrs. C.F. Hoaglin), Ida (Mrs. L.A. Runyon,) D. Mark, J. William, Geo. W. and Benjamin R. These together with twenty-seven grand children and three great grand children mourn the loss of Father and Mother Boley. Sister Boley has three brothers and one sister still living. They are Randall Smutz of Hillsboro, Colby Smutz of Pawnee City, Nebr., Mark Smutz of Dalls, Oregon, and Mrs. Mary Syfert of Hillsboro.
