Dorrence Lee Hemmings, 93, of Fort Madison, IA, passed away at 4:57 a.m., Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at The Kensington in Fort Madsion.

Born September 5, 1922, near Big Mound, IA, the son of William Andrew and Grace Elizabeth (Smith) Hemmings. On February 14, 1944, he married Vera Myrtle Eden in Fort Madison, IA. She preceded him in death on May 7, 2001.

Survivors include one son, William H. (Connie) Hemmings of Coeur d'Alene, ID; three daughters, Rose A. (Rich) Weitzel of Mundelein, IL, Karen L. Bergman of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Carol J. (Gary) Uhland of Warsaw, IL; nine grandchildren, Matthew Weitzel and David Weitzel of Iowa City, IA, Philip Weitzel of Mundelein IL, and Sara Weitzel of New York City, NY, Brandi (Travis) Hemmings Smith and Ty (Lori) Ullman of Spokane, WA, Joshua (Deb) of Ankeny, IA, and Dr. Kelly (Aaron) Cowan of South Burlington, VT, and Dr. Jason Weirather of Iowa City, IA; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Stevens of Rockford, IL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Vera, his parents, and two sisters, Kathryn Turner and Betty Tatum.

Dorrence was a member of the First Methodist Church in Fort Madison. He was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High school and attended Iowa State University. Dorrence, farmed near Donnellson, IA. He worked as a millwright and later as a maintenance engineer for First Miss. Dorrence was an amateur radio operator and volunteered for the MARS Army Radio Network for over 60 years. His call letters were WOIHC. He enjoyed computers, playing golf, photography, and spending time with his family.

Funeral services were held at the Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson with Pastor Lane Van officiating.

Burial was at the Sharon Cemetery in rural Farmington, IA. The Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson assisted the family with the arrangements.
