Obituary of Robert Forbes

Robert Forbes departed this life February 28, 1922. He was born January 5, 1845, near Mt. Zion, Iowa, being the fifth and last surviving child of a family of six children of Robert and Elizabeth Forbes.

His entire life except the time spent in the army during the civil war was lived in or near Keosauqua.

On February 28, 1867, just fifty-five years to the date of his departure, he was married to Cinthea Hellyer. To this union were born eight children, two having died in infancy. The ones surviving are: Anna Miller, Bloomfield, Iowa; William, Clarinda, Iowa; Walter and Benjamin, Keosauqua; Margaret Lambertson, Ontario, Cal., and Robert, Asheville, N.C. The wife and nine grandchildren also survive.

August 9th, 1862, at the age of seventeen, he became a member of Co. I, 19th Iowa regiment of the U.S. army, and continued to serve his country until he received his final discharge July 18, 1865. Those who have read the history of this regiment know of the service they rendered and the hardships they endured, especially when prisoners at Tyler, Texas, in the winter of 1863-1864. Too high a tribute cannot be paid to such soldiers as Robert Forbes, who gave of their services and offered their lives for the good of our country. Not only was Mr. Forbes a good soldier, but a good neighbor. Always alert in finding some way in which he might assist a neighbor, always speaking good, never evil, of his acquaintances, made him respected and honored by the entire community.

He lived his Christianity, not professed it, saying long before he was called that he was ready and willing to go.

Funeral services were held at the home in Keosauqua Thursday, March 2, conducted by Rev. J.C. Caughlan. Interment in the Pittsburg cemetery.

CARD OF THANKS.

We desire to express our appreciation of the many kindnesses of our friends, and their tokens of sympathy in the time of our bereavement, and especially to the ladies of the W.R.C.

Mrs. Robert Forbes and Family
