Obituary of James W. Stump.

James William Stump was born Sept. 25, 1845 near Libertyville in Jefferson County Iowa and died Dec. 25, 1929, on Christmas night at 8:30 p.m. on the farm on which he had spent almost his entire life, at the age of eighty-four years and three months.

He volunteered and joined the service of the Civil War on Jan. 4th, 1864, at the age of nineteen years and was honorably discharged from Co. H 3rd Iowa Calvary on Aug. 9th, 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia, and he was among the last of his company to answer the roll call.

He was the son of George and Mary Stump and there were five children in the family and all have preceded him in death.

He was married to Harriett E. Martin on Dec. 16th, 1868 and they have lived to see their 61st anniversary. To this union were born eight children, six of whom are still living: Elmer of Ottumwa, Perry, Amaziah, Arch and Charlie all living near home of their father and Mrs. Anna Lanman of Bonaparte, Iowa. Ellen dying in infancy and Mrs. Alice Creek who died in 1912.

Besides the faithful wife and children he leaves one half brother, Jasper Barthelow of Douds, Iowa, thirteen grandchildren, one step-grandson also fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his going.

He joined the M.P. church at Union about thirty-five years ago and has served as Sunday school Supt. and as class leader at different times as long as his health permitted. He was always one to the faithful few and will be sadly missed in the community as he always had a friendly smile a hand shake for all who knew him as he was a man who made friends wherever he went. The home once bright and happy is now overcast with gloom and sorrow without the presence of the ever kind and thoughtful father and companion.

"Well done thou good and faithful servant.
Enter thou into the joys of the Lord
'Tis hard to break the tender cord
Where love has bound the heart,
'Tis hard, so hard to speak the words,\
We must part."

Dearest loved one, we must lay thee in the peaceful grave's embrace.
But thy memory will be cherished
Till we see thy heavenly face."

Funeral service was conducted at the home on Dec. 27th at eleven a.m., in charge of Rev. Barber of Eldon and burial in Fell cemetery near Libertyville. Six grandchildren acting as pallbearers: Floyd and Harold Stump, John and Van Creek, Russell Stump and Roy Stump.
