Death of Hazel Van Auken

Hazel Dell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Van Auken, died Thursday, July 1, 1920, at the family home in Burlington, after an illness of a year and a half, although her condition did not become critical until nine weeks ago. She was born in Upton, Mo., Sept. 27, 1900, and hence was 19 year’s old when the death angel called her. She came to Burlington with her family a little more than a year ago, from Keosauqua where most of her life was spent. She was a popular girl and young lady and made many friends to mourn her early departure. Her mother passed away when Hazel was four years old. Her father was united in marriage to Mrs. Addie Roush, June 30, 1908. Besides her many friends she leaves to mourn her loss, father, stepmother, brother Fern Van Auken, two step-sisters Mrs. Hazel V. Dustin, and Miss Dora Marie Roush. One brother Clark, a sister Oletha and Edgar a half brother preceded her in death. She united with the Christian church in 1914 and ever remained a faithful member. She attended college with her step-sister Hazel V. After completing their course they went west in search of health for Hazel D. The two girls dressed alike, their names were the same and they were much attached to each other, being almost constantly together. Hazel was a loving daughter and sister, a patient sufferer and will be greatly missed. Funeral services were held at Mt. Sterling, July 3, in charge of Eld. J.M. Hedges, pastor of the Keosauqua Christian church, and burial was in the Harness cemetery. The pall-bearers were Ned DeHart, Albert McIntosh, Glen Cox, Kenneth Barker, Chas. Anson, Welden Lee, and the honorary bearers were Hazel DeHart, Nina DeHart, Reva Patten, Lola Fellows, Verle Davis and Martha Jackson, all Keosauqua school mates of deceased.
