Bertha Beryl Gaston, oldest daughter of Will and Millie Gaston, was born on June 14, 1900, in Vernon township near Mt. Sterling, Iowa, and went to the haven of rest June 25, 1918, aged 18 years and 12 days. She had been afflicted for almost 3 years and during the entire time bore her sufferings with great patience and fortitude. When 10 years of age she united with the M.E. church, becoming a member at Center Chapel. She lived a pure Christian life and was always faithful to her Lord and Savior. Her presence could be counted on in the Sunday school and in the church services and she was always willing to help where she had opportunity. She had constant thought for others and to know her was to love her. A place in the home, church and community is vacant, one that can never be filled. Beryl has gone to that bright, eternal home prepared for the children of God and she is awaiting the coming of her dear ones to give them glad welcome. She was a girl of sterling qualities and of great ambition. She began attendance on the high school at Keosauqua in the fall of 1915 but on account of failing health was compelled to give up her home work, hoping to return when she regained her health, but such hopes were never realized. She budded on earth to blooms in heaven under the smile and benediction of God’s love. The funeral was conducted at Center Chapel by the pastor , the Rev. G.H. Smith, interment in Center Chapel cemetery.
