Last week we made mention that Allen W. Jewett, son of the late Ozro Jewett and wife of Harrisburg township, Van Buren county, had been killed in France. Fairfield was the home of the young man and the Ledger of May 2 had the following additional facts pertaining to his death:
“The first great sacrifice to the lust of the German militarists that Jefferson county has made was the death of Allen W. Jewett, who was killed in action April 18th. Notification of the young man’s death came to the mother, Mrs. Rosella Jewett, last Wednesday from Major Geo. Barnett, at Washington, D.C. The message simply stated that the young man was killed in action, that Private Jewett nobly gave his life in defense of his country, and contained words of sympathy to the mother. The body, it was stated, would be interred abroad until the termination of the war. Allen W. Jewett was 21 years of age Dec. 27, last. He enlisted as a private in the marine corps April 18, 1917, being in service exactly one year. He went, at the time of his enlistment, to Paris Island, S.C., being accompanied by Byron and Fred Neibert, of this city. The Neibert boys are now stationed in this country.”
