Oliver Rowe was born near Greensburg, Westmoreland county, Pa., April 4th, 1838, and died at his home near Piercerville, Van Buren county, Iowa, August 15, 1932, at the age of 94 years, 4 months and 11 days.
He was the second son of Jonathan and Sarah Rowe and came to Iowa with his parents in 1854. The journey was made from Pittsburg, Pa., by steamboat down the Ohio and up the Mississippi river to Keokuk, Iowa, where the family resided for one year before moving to Van Buren county. Oliver was then 16 years old and being industrious secured employment with a milling company and hauled flour to Bloomfield, Iowa, making the trip each week. The country was new and he met with much exposure on the long trip during winter time. After living in Keokuk one year the family moved to Van Buren county and settled on a farm near Pierceville.
He was married to Malinda A. Warner in 1858. Six children survive him, Laura A. Mendenhall of Des Moines, O.W. and George R. of Keokuk, E.E. and Ellis R. near Stockport, and Mrs. Myrtle Glascock who lived at home. The children constantly attended him in last illness. There are also 11 grandchildren, 10 great children, (sic) and one great great grandchild; also two brothers living in the west and two sisters, one living in Kansas, and one, Mrs. Mary Martin, of Bonaparte, Iowa, who attended the funeral.
He was an honored pioneer citizen of the county for over half a century, always ready to help his neighbors in a most generous way. He bore his afflictions and illness with great fortitude. He was a faithful member of the Baptist church since 1889. The end came peacefully at 11 o’clock at night, remains were laid to rest in the Miller Chapel cemetery beside the wife. The services were held at the Utica church, conducted by Rev. C.E. Strong of Kilbourne, Iowa.
