The death of Mrs. A.H. Lane removes from the roster of Ban Buren county pioneers one of its oldest members. Mrs. Lane passed away at her home in Keosauqua on Thursday night, May 17. She would have been ninety-one years of age next August.
Their home was for years in Henry township southeast of Keosauqua. Besides operating his farm Mr. Lane was also a carpenter and contractor. Many of the farm residences and barns in the vicinity of his home, also a number of buildings in Keosauqua were erected by him.
The surviving members of the family are three daughters, Mrs. Stella Wright of Keosauqua, widow of the late John Wright; Mrs. Edwin DeFord of Cantril; and Mrs. Lena Bennett of Cantril; also three sons, Edgar Lane, who made his home with his mother at Keosauqua; F.G. Lane of Washington state.
Funeral services were held at the late home on Sunday afternoon with interment in Purdom cemetery. Those attending from Cantril were Rev. and Mrs. Gilbert, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Davidson and Mrs. O.M. Casady.
______________________________Katherine Elizabeth Snare, eldest child of George and Agnes Snare, was born in Logan county, Ohio, August 23, 1843, and departed this life May 18, 1934, aged 90 years, 8 months and 25 days. At the age of 6 years she came with her parents to Iowa, which state has been her home excepting a few years in Missouri, coming to a farm near Mt. Sterling in the early sixties. She attended school a few years in Keosauqua and taught two years.
While in Keosauqua she met a young soldier of the Civil War A.H. Lane. They were united in marriage Oct. 29, 1866. They lived in Davis and Van Buren counties most of their married life, coming to the Center Chapel neighborhood in 1881 and to Keosauqua in 1904 to the home where she passed away. To this union were born nine children, six daughters and three sons, six of whom are now living Edgar and Estella Wright, who lived with her and cared for her in her last days; Agnes Snider of Montana, who died in 1913; Alvis of Seattle, Wash.; Lottie who died in infancy; George of Haworth, New Jersey; Ora DeFord of Cantril; Anna, who died in 1911; and Lena Bennett of Morrowville, Kansas. Mr. Lane preceded her in death 27 years ago.
In early childhood she gave her heart to Christ and has always lived a consistent Christian life, loving to study her Bible. She was a loving, devoted mother, a good neighbor and a friend to all. She leaves to mourn her going six children, 11 grandchildren, 5 grandchildren preceding her in death, 11 great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. A neighbor remarked, The world is better for her having lived in it. To know her was to love her.
