Eli Hill, subject of this memoir, was born Sept. 26, 1856, at Ashton, Clark county, Mo., passing to rest at his home at Bentonsport April 15, aged 75 years, 6 months and 19 days. He was united in marriage with Laura B. Owings, Aug. 11, 1881, and in happy companionship have continued their home with the friends of a lifetime who recognized their nobility of heart and mind and beautiful traits of neighborly kindness toward all.
Two children blessed the union, Rosa Mae and Harry. Rosa Mae beloved wife of Russell Henry, was called home in 1910, following closely the death of the father, leaving four lovely children in the care of Mr. and Mrs. Hill who treasured them as the sunshine of their home and hearts, and whose lives embodied the beautiful traits of the devoted grandparents. One by one they joined the sainted Mother until all were gone except Mrs. June Corns. The bereaved wife and mother and son, Harry, 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren survive and mourn the loss of a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Mr. Hill was a member of the I.O.O.F. and Rebekah lodges, his affiliation as officer and member ever a pleasing duty. A thorough knowledge of the rituals made his service happy associations the theme of his life’s duties. Gentle and unassuming, suffering physical pain, he was ever cheerful, forgetting self in his cheery greeting to the friends along the way who cherish memories that never fade. Thus he “Lived so as to be loved while living and mourned when gone.” “The friend of all. Giving the best he had that the best would come to him.”
Funeral services were held Sunday at Bentonsport, Rev. D.D. Flanagan officiating. Interment in Bentonsport cemetery.
