Wednesday, June 1, marked the passing of another pioneer mother; one of those brave women who endured the hardships and trials of the early settlers, and helped to lay the foundation for the present citizenship of Iowa.

Hannah Stull Shepherd, widow of Henry Clay Shepherd, died at the home of her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Chaney, Wednesday afternoon, June 1; for more than five years she had been a confined invalid, but her declining days had been made comfortable and happy by the untiring devotions and care of her daughter and family. She had been growing weaker for months, a very gradual wearing out of the earthly body, until finally the spirit was released.

Hannah Stull, daughter of John and Jennie Stull, was born near Salem, Guernsey county, Ohio, Sept. 7, 1845. She was one of eight children, five boys and three girls. The family moved to Iowa in 1852, locating on the Stull farm near Bentonsport. Here Hannah grew to womanhood, and on Sept. 17, 1863, was united in marriage to Henry Shepherd.

To this union were born three children: John W., who preceded his parents in death June 5, 1921; George N. of Chester, Montana, and Mrs. Jennie Chaney, who with eleven grandchildren, and twenty great grandchildren are thus deprived of a mother and grandmother. She also leaves to mourn one sister, Mrs. Margaret Jackson, age 92, of Ottumwa, Iowa; and one brother, David Stull of County Line, Iowa.

The Shepherd home stood for hospitality and everything that was best in the community. Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd united with the Methodist church in Bentonsport, Iowa, June 4, 1871, and their lives were moulded (sic) by the abiding faith that sustained them during their lives.

Declining health on the part of both the old people, made it necessary in 1919 for them to make their home with their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Chaney, just across the way from their own home; and here, in May, 1922, Mr. Shepherd died.

Mrs. Shepherd moved with the Chaney family to Bonaparte four years ago, these last years being the only part of her life lived away from the Shepherd neighborhood near Bentonsport, except her childhood days.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Bentonsport Friday afternoon, June 3, with Rev. Cox of Keosauqua, in charge.
Interment in Bentonsport cemetery.

(I referenced the Bentonsport Cemetery Register for the year of death.)
