PETER L. DAVIS

Peter L. Davis, son of Harvey and Hannah Davis, was born near Zanesville, Ohio, on Oct. 27, 1855, and departed this life March 10, 1935, at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 13 days. As a boy he acme(sp) with his parents to Van Buren county, settling on a farm near Lebanon where he continued to live until his marriage.

On Jan. 1, 1885, he was united in marriage to Cora Workman. To this union were born three daughters, Sophia, Mabel and Hazel, who have all preceded him in death. Their mother died on March 31, 1898.

On Feb. 25, 1899, Mr. Davis was united in marriage to Emma McVey who passed away June 1933. Since that time he has continued to live in his home in Keosauqua until a few days prior to his passing when he went to make his home with his niece, Mrs. Howe Anderson.

He was converted at the chapel which was then near the cemetery in Lebanon. There was no doubt in his own mind as to the genuineness of this conversion. He later united with the M.E. church at Mt. Zion, Iowa, during the pastorate of Rev. Shane. On Dec. 12, 1912, he transferred his membership to the Keosauqua M.E. church where he remained a member until his death.

Besides his grandson Burl Smith, he is survived by two brothers, Winfield Scott Davis of Drakesville, and Aaron Worthington Davis of Prescott, Kansas, and one sister, Mrs. Adeline Stotsbury of Keosauqua; also other relatives and many neighbors and friends.

One brother Wm. Crayton, and one sister, Carie B. preceded him in death.

Mr. Davis was a lover of children and the heart of many a child has been gladdened by some little gift received from his hand. The flesh became heavy and he wearied of life and longed to be at rest with loved ones gone before.

Funeral services were held from the Burnett funeral home in Keosauqua at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in charge of Rev. M.E. Hayes. Interment in Pittsburg cemetery. ***
