Howard Davis

West Branch, Iowa - Howard Davis, 87, West Branch, died Monday, May 3, 2004, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, after a brief illness.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 6, at the Friends Church, West Branch. Burial will be at West Branch Cemetery.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home, West Branch. A memorial fund has been established.

Mr. Davis was born Feb. 26, 1917, in West Branch, the son of Thomas M. and Luella Branson Davis. He married Grace Wolf June 17, 1950, in Keosauqua.

He graduated from West Branch High School in 1934 and then went on to graduate from Iowa State University with a degree in agriculture education. For two years, he taught vocational agriculture and an adult farmer program in the Keota School System.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-1945.

He and his wife farmed southeast of West Branch in the Centerdale area for many years before retiring in 1984. After retiring, they spent 20 winters in Sun City, Ariz., and were involved with the Southwest Indian School in Peoria, Ariz. and with the Sun City Prides, a city beautification program.

He was a member of the Friends Church, West Branch, as well as the Farm Bureau of which he was a past president. He also served as a Cedar County supervisor for eight years and as a volunteer guide with the Herbert Hoover Library in West Branch for 10 years.

Survivors include his wife Grace; a son, Duane Davis and wife Lois of San Salvador, El Salvador; four daughters, Nancy Sundberg and husband Dave of Ames, Janet Greiner and husband Tim of Treynor, Carol Lumpa and husband Dean of West Branch and Betty Fox and husband Sandy of Huntersville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and two sisters, Thelma Johnston of Cedar Rapids and Helen Holland of Hudson, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Belva Vincent.
