James Work
James Work, a life-long resident of Birmingham, passed away, Nov. 30, at the age of 82 years 16 days. His father, Samuel Work, was one of the earliest settlers at Birmingham, coming in an early day from Ind'ana, and settling on the farm, southeast of town known as the "Work place." Here James, one of the family of eight, was born, Nov. 14, 1850. Mr. Work was married March 24, 1892 to Mary V. Hucklebury, at Eldon, Iowa. Mrs. Work died, Oct. 1, 1907.
He leaves besides his son Fred, one sister, Mrs. Emma Bailey, of Birmingham; three brothers, J.Q. of Lamar, Missouri, T.J. of Los Angeles, California, and R.E. of Birmingham.
All his life was spent in and near Birmingham. For some time he resided on the large farm, northwest of town, now occupied by his son Fred, but since the death of his wife he has been mostly with his sister, Mrs. Emma Bailey, on the old Work homestead.
His life motto was "Be Fair" and he strove on all his relationships to live up to it. He was very generous and even though he knew he was often imposed upon, his hand was always open to the plea of need.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church of Birmingham, Friday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, in charge of the pastor, Howard C. Irvine.
