Virginia Louise "Gig" Small, 93, of Farmington, Iowa, died June 18, 2014 at her home in Farmington.
She was born August 23, 1920 in Packwood, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Bessie May (Wilson) Edmund. On November 19, 1944 she married Parley D. Small in Packwood, Iowa.
Survivors include one son James (Mary) Small of Croton, Iowa, one daughter Mary (Dusty) Hilyar of Long Beach, California, one sister Mary Katherine Woolums of Des Moines, Iowa, one granddaughter Abby Small, one great-grandson Matthew Small of Farmington, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Parley and two sisters, Helen Wiggins and Jo Sturgell.
Virginia attended Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois earning her Bachelor's Degree and the University of Northern Iowa earning her Master's Degree. She taught school for forty years in the Pekin and Ottumwa school districts. She was a member of the Farmington United Methodist Church where she played the piano for over thirty years and a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Virginia enjoyed quilting, working crossword puzzles, reading and playing the piano.
Virginia's body has been donated to the University of Iowa's Anatomy Department. Burial will be at a later date at Keokuk National Cemetery.
Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Farmington is assisting the family with arrangements.
