Lydia Strickling Overman

Lydia Strickling Overman, daughter of Dr. Henry and Sarah Ann (Kincaid) Strickling, was born in Keosauqua, Iowa, on born in Keosauqua, Iowa on December 25, 1862, and passed away at her home in Keosauqua, Iowa, on January 15, 1935 at 5:50 p.m., at the age of 72 years and 21 days.

She came from one of the pioneer families of Van Buren county, her father, Dr. Henry Strickling being a prominent physician here and will be remembered by many residents of this community. Her mother preceded her in death which occurred March 11, 1877 likewise her father, whose death occurred September 22, 1901.

She was one of eight children Sariah Elizabeth, Beatrice, Joseph Calvin, Wm. Jordan, Henry, Evelena and Harley Henry and Harley died in infancy. All of her brothers and sisters, have preceded her in death except Evelena Stewart of Arlington, Texas, and June Ream her half sister.

Her father was again married in December 30, 1878 to Mary Murphy. To this union was born one daughter, June Ream, now of Portland, Oregon.

On September 29, 1880, she united in marriage to J.M. Overman, of Keosauqua, Iowa. To this union were born two children, Roy S. and Bess E., of Keosauqua, Iowa.

She is survived by her devoted husband, her son and daughter, two grandchildren, Caroline Frances and James Roberts Overman her sisters Evelena and June Ream and a number of nieces and nephews, and hosts of friends.

All her life was spent in Keosauqua and she deeply loved the town and the people in it. She was always interested in the community welfare. She liked people; she was a most lovable woman, of a happy disposition and temperament, radiating friendliness and sunshine amongst those with whom she came in contact. She was a true friend in sickness and trouble and wherever there was a need she would be found to minister and help in any way possible.

She was above all devoted to her home and her family, a home which had been established more than 54 years ago, which was broken only by her death.

She was from early girlhood an active and earnest member of the Methodist church of Keosauqua. A member of its Ruthian Society and for years a member of its Board of Stewards.

She was likewise a member of Chapter I.P.E.O. Sisterhood of Keosauqua.

In her passing the community loses one of its most honored and faithful wife, mother and friend and a truly Christian woman.
