JUDGE C. W. VERMILLION

Apparently recovering from an operation to remove kidney stones, Justice Charles W. Vermillion of the Iowa Supreme court suffered a relapse and died at a hospital in Des Moines Sept. 2.

The dead jurist was 61 years old and would have completed his fourth year on the supreme court bench in November.

Stricken at his home in Centerville ten days ago, Justice Vermillion was brought to Des Moines and the operation performed immediately. His wife and daughter were with him at the time of death.

The body was taken to Centerville and funeral services held Monday.

Completing a course of study at Depauw Univeristy, Justice Vermillion was graduated from the University of Michigan in 1889 at the age of 23, and immediately entered his father's law offices in Centerville.

At the age of 26 he was elected couty attorney of Appanoose county and reelected to a second term. In 1902 Gov. Shaw appointed the young attorney to fill the vacancy on the second district court bench where he remained for 21 years.

In 1923, Gov. Kendall appointed him to the supreme court bench to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Justice Weaver. He was elected for the full six years term in 1926.

Justice Vermillion is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs. E. L. Simmons of Albia.

He was a republican in politics and a member of the Presbyterian church.
