She was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Clark and came with them in infancy to Ohio, and at the age of ten to Iowa in the year 1841. Her father was one of the pioneer preachers of Methodism. When they came to Iowa, they located about four miles from Lebanon. She was united in marriage to L. W. Pettit in August, 1851. To this union nine children were born, one child, Mary, dying at 14 months of age. The others, Samuel of Illinois, Laura of Farmington, Ia., Lizzie of Oregon, Ethia of Milton, Iowa, Luther of Texas, Achsa, Eugene and Nenia, of Lebanon, Iowa, are living.
Her husband died May, 1899.
Eight children, 17 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, one sister, Achsa Hitchcock, of Kansas, and many other relatives and friends mourn her loss.
She was converted at 14 years of age and united with the Methodist church. She lived a consistent member of that church, during her long life. God was ever to her a living presence, abiding with her. In her life and ocnversation [sic] continually she acknowledged Him. No one could associate with her and not be reminded of her Faith in God. She was sick six days and passed almost without pain from this life to her home in the Father's house.
