A WELL KNOWN
TURFMAN DIESFRANK HATTER ANSWERED SUMMONS YESTERDAY
Frank Hatter, well known in years past as a turfman and handlr [sic] of race horses, died at his home on East Mill street yesterday, Sunday morning, at 5:15. Death was due to tuberculosis from which the colored man had been a sufferer for some time past. Few horsemen were better known than Old Frank Hatter, who while but 62 years of age, was a veteran in the handling of horses and took care of and brought out, as well as drove specially, a number of well known horses of Ottumwa in past years. Until within two years ago he had charge of the two well known steppers of Joseph Dain, “Tommy Lindsey” and “Nick Carter.” He also drove for George Withers the horse known as “Diocese.” “Dolly D.” a clever little performing mare owned by John Berkes, with a mark of 2:17 1/4 was handled by Hatter, who also owned and drove “Leora,” whose mark was 2:27 1/2.
The funeral was held today at 2 p.m. from the residence, conducted by Rev. B. Franklin Abner of the Second Baptist church. Interment was in Shaul cemetery.
