Peril Columbus Haynes was born 9 December 1826 at Cornersville, Tennessee and was the son of James Sloan Haynes and Asenath Wilson. His mother died nine months after he was born. Peril Columbus enlisted for service in the Mexican War in June 1846 for twelve months and served with his brothers Milton and Rufus Haynes. Afterwards he used military land warrants issued for his Mexican War service to establish himself on land near Pulaski, Van Buren County, Iowa. He returned to Tennessee in 1859 and during the Civil War, he served under Nathan Bedford Forrest as the commanding officer in Company A, Starnes 4th Cavalry Regiment of Tennessee. He fought in several battles and was injured at Franklin, TN by a minnie ball passing through his mouth. He was never in good health from that point on. Peril Columbus married Melissa Patterson 24 Feb 1850 and for most of their married life resided near Chapel Hill in Marshall County, Tennessee. He died 7 Dec 1907 and was buried in the Haynes-Patterson Cemetery one-half mile west of Chapel Hill.
